C16 - Dismantling the Crankcases

Basic order is to remove the timing cover, take apart the camshaft chain and sprockets, then the oil pump. Split the cases and remove the crankshaft

Remove the Cover

1) Assuming the engine is out of the bike - mount in a vice or some such.

2) Remove the two contact breaker cover screws and take off the cover.

NOTE: There is an up and down to this cover - the small weep hole should go down.

3) Remove the contact breaker cam center bolt, serrated washer and plain washer.

3a) I was running a Boyer, so there are a few differences here. I removed the pickup plate, then the cap screw that holds the magnets on the cam shaft taper.

4) Using tool number 064298 or something similar, screw the shaft into the contact breaker cam and sharply slide the weight to break the taper on the shaft. You don't need to remove the breaker plate from the timing cover at this point.

Here's the Boyer magnets off. (I made the tool by putting the correct threads on the end of a bolt, and drilling a hole in some round stock. Took about 10 minutes.)

5) Remove the timing cover screws and then remove the cover. You can gently tap from behind the pressure release valve with a hide hammer if needed. NEVER pry directly on the mating surfaces - say with a screw driver or something.

I was also running an RMA automatic chain tensioner. See RMA Automatic Cam Chain Tensioner

6) When you remove the timing cover, the breaker lead wires are threaded through the case and need to be withdrawn. To get them through the hole you might need to turn one of the bullet ends backwards and then feed them through one at a time.

Remove the Oil Pump

7) Remove the two nuts securing the oil pump. If the oil pump is tight on the studs you can walk it out by turning the pump drive wheel.
